The Pastor’s Thoughts
Rushing
to beat the traffic, to pay the bills before the due date, to cross the railroad either in Longmont , Hygiene (or who knows
where) before the train blocks, rushing to places we do not even know—that is the order of the day. The fast-paced life
has conditioned our bodies to be on adrenaline rush; when we sit to sip a cup of coffee or tea (like me) we feel time is wasted.
Like a wounded bull, we pace up and down simply because our bodies are on adrenaline rush, our minds don’t even know
what we want to do. Yes, our bodies are conditioned! Yet we are supposed to sit and relax in quietness, look at the wonders
of nature and recover the lost ener-gy. At some point, Christ was so busy holding back to back committee meetings,
listening to the needs of people and making visitations. Word would spread like wild fire where his next stop was and big
crowds waited for him. Christ was a real celebrity. It became so bad, to a point there were moments he and his students (disciples)
had neither time to grab something to eat, rest nor catch up. And he said to them ―Come with me by yourselves to a quiet
place and get some rest‖ (Mark 6: 31). Rest and relaxation is important; it slows us down for a good rea-son.
That is what Christ teaches us. It does not mean forgetting what we always need to do. Instead to rest is to perceive life
in a new dimension. Lots of work with no rest doesn’t follow the example God set when the heavens and earth were created.
God rested on the seventh day. I believe many people make a resolution to slow down and take some rest. But most times
it is dishonored; I bet before the end of January. Taking rest is Godly, something I want to keep reminding myself in 2012.
Make it intentional, slow down and regain the lost energy. Grace & Peace Pastor Amos Kariuki
Ramblins of the Lay Leader As I was driving back from my daughter's
home the other day, I noticed the sign of spring in the greenness of the fields that had been planted winter wheat. I also
knew that spring was not too far in the future as it was a warm and balmy sort of spring like day. A gaggle of geese were
also flying over head as if to remind me that winter is not quite over. I have often thought we sometimes
would like to rush things to suit our own fancy, but it is in the time of our Creator when things will happen. I do look forward
to the coming days when spring will arrive. As for now, the fire in the family room stove sure does feel good to warm up by.
Just can't wait until the first seed catalogue come in the mail. Enjoy the days that we are all given and give
thanks for each and every day. Now, I wonder where I put that shovel last year? Andrew Ernst

Mountain
Sky Outlook Vital Congregations and High Adventure Newsletter Title
Volume 1, Issue
1 By Rev. Steve Goodier, Utah/Western Colorado District Superintendent January 18, 2012
View from the Mountain Sky Area of
The United Methodist Church Does your church have a spirit of high adventure?
We talk a lot these days about
changing the culture of our churches. Not that it all has to be changed. But the RMC and YAC Cabinets believe at least one
Mountain Sky cultural change is needed. It has to do with risk-taking and failure. We believe that the church of the 21st
Century will thrive best in a culture where it is not only okay, but encouraged, to experiment, take risks and even fail.
It’s about adopting a spirit of high adventure. And it is through the lens of adventure
that I best understand the Vital Congregations Project. Let me explain. I believe the Vital Congregations
project is NOT about: But I believe it IS about taking risks. It’s about: Setting goals high enough to make us do something different, but not so high we get discouraged (it takes courage to set goals
that stretch). Planning
something new and different, something we’ve never done before; trying new
ways to reach people; conducting experiments in being the church and making disciples for Jesus Christ. Experimenting in ministry. It’s about having the courage to take significant risks and not being afraid to
fail. Did your bold, new experiment work? If so, great! If not, what did you learn? Do you have the guts to try some-thing
like that again? I am convinced that those churches that will set good goals (high enough to stretch,
low enough to succeed); those churches that will plan to do something different next year to meet those goals; and those churches
that will coura-geously experiment
will be better for it. They will simply do a better job making disciples of Jesus Christ.
Vital Congregations is about one thing – improving how we minister. And I’m not sure
we can do it without a spirit of high adventure. If Vital Congregations is just about tracking statistics and mindlessly (albeit
religiously) reporting them, then it is a waste of time. But if pursued in a bold spirit of actually trying new things in
order to get different results, then something good is bound to happen. I hope our churches will approach their Vital
Congregations work in a spirit of high adventure. It seems we have much to gain and very little to lose.
Appreciation HUMC! You
do-nated $650 to two families with chil-dren at Hygiene Elementary School. The fami-lies were surprised and expressed GREAT
apprecia-tion! Another Year of Ministry through Angel Tree! A BIG thank you in appreci-ation
for all the hard work you and your volunteers have done serving the children and families in 2011 with gifts, and more
importantly with the Gospel message. Not only were you the visi-ble "hands and feet" of Jesus, you also spread the
good news of the Gospel by word as well as deed. Thanks to Leroy and
Jerry for tak-ing the mower up to Jerry's for storage until it is needed again. (won't be long and spring will be
here again) Thanks to Linda Gaede for taking on replacing the
pew cushion in fellowship hall. It needed a much needed make over. I mentioned to caring hands and it is being done. Thanks to JR and Andy for working on the parking lot lights.
Thanks to all the bell ringers from Hygiene Church. We rang for a total of 3 hours and was credited for $617.40.
This will be used at the OUR center to help with their programs. Another mission outreach of our church. Thanks to Pat Hill who has been cleaning the church for 17 years! It has been appreciated!
As you may al-ready know. we are trying a volunteer cleaning
of the church and Fel-lowship hall. This is not a paid posi- tion and will require all of our help.
If you see something that needs done, please let Andy Ernst know. If you see some-thing that needs picked up or put away that
you can do, please do it. If we all work together we can keep our church and hall in good shape. Thank you for all your help. February refreshement hostesess: Linda Gaede and Barbara Burneson

Men’s Retreat All men of the church are invited
and welcomed to participate in a Men’s
Retreat on the weekend of March 2, 2012 organized by the Longs Peak United Methodist Men. The overnight event will be held at the Ab-bey of St. Walburga, about a 90 minute drive from Longmont in the mountains
near Virgina Dale. The retreat will focus on spiritual practices as we observe and share in the routine of the Benedictine
monks. For more information, or to sign up, please contact Steve Gaffney of the Longs Peak United Methodist Men or
Pastor Amos.
Electronic
Funds Transfer A reminder that you can also give your gift or tithe through
EFT. Please speak with either Linda Shipley (finance chair) or Linda Gaede (treasurer). FYI
Pastor Amos has a class via telephone on DiSC & Discipleship every Tuesday 2:00-3:00pm from January 10-March

class. Thank you for your understand-ing. Please send your newsletter
items in by February 20th! We have a piano in fellowship hall
that the Church would like to get rid of. It is the one that sits to the north. If anyone knows of a student that would like
to have it, please let any of the Trustees know. We are also offering it to any church that would need
a piano for their church. It is a nice piano but we don't need two pianos and would like to see it get used by some-one
who can appreciate it. Liturgists To be a liturgist please sign up in our fellowship hall. You will be asked to read the scripture and help with our call to Worship. There are still slots
available. Please help perform this very valuable function.
Grocery or Gas or Prescription Coupons See Barbara Burneson or Norma Homen for your grocery/gas coupon/gift cards. The church reaps a percentage

Lent Dates: Lent is a forty-day period before Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday. We skip Sundays when we count the forty
days, because Sundays commemorate the Resurrection. Lent begins on 22 February 2012 and ends on 7 April 2012, which
is the day before Easter.…… Colors: In most churches, the decorations are purple, the royal color,
to prepare for the King. …… Special Days: Ash Wednesday, 9 March 2011 The Annunciation, 25 March ….. Lent is a season of soul-searching and
repent-ance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a
preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared
for baptism. ……………….
Our
People: Linda Gaede I was born in Stockton, Kansas and we moved to Minneola,
Ks when I was a year old. That is where I grew up and attended schools. I went to Sterling College (Kansas) and that
is where I met my husband to be, Byron Gaede. We were married in Sept. 1962 and lived in Lyons, Kansas for about 2
years. Our daughter,Shari, was born there in 1963. Byron worked for a lumber yard before we met and was moved to an
assistant manager position in Ly-ons. They then asked him to be a manager of Calhan, Co. yard so we moved there in 1965. Our
son, David, was born there in 1968. During this time I worked part time and learned the bookkeeping and waiting on customers, etc.
In the fall of 1969 Byron was offered a manager position in the company's Rock Springs, Wy yard and we moved there.
We learned to have fun in the country of Wyoming, fishing, camping snow-mobiling and Byron hunt-ed also. After the children
were old enough I worked more often and by the time our son went off to college at CSU I was working full time. In
1987, the company was not doing well after a few changes in ownership and Byron started looking for another position. We had
talked to the owners of the store in Erie and had decided to come to Colo-rado again. About that time they sold the store
to some other people we knew and they went ahead and hired Byron. We moved to Longmont in April 1987. When Byron started working
the bookkeeper at the yard was not what the employer wanted so he asked me to come in so he could talk to me. And I ended
up getting the job and have been there since then, almost 25 years, at County Line Lumber in Erie. My daughter has
one son, Christopher, who is mar-ried and living in Ohio. He has two sons Korben and Asher and just this October they added
a girl, Rosalyn, to the family! I really didn't have a church home when Byron became ill in the fall of 2008. We
learned he had cancer and he left this world in June 2009. Jan Davies is my neighbor as many of you know and she finally got
me to Hygiene UMC. I fell in love with the people there and how caring and loving they all are. I joined HUMC in May 2010.
I have so en-joyed all the friendships I have made there. Even tho I had tried some other churches around this com-munity,
HUMC was the on-ly one for me as I was raised in a small church and still go there when I go back home to Kansas.
